“We (the Companions) were returning from the battle of Tabuk with the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, when he said: 'There are people left behind in Medina who were with us in every pass we crossed and every valley we traversed. They were held back by some (valid) excuse.'”

Bukhari with a chain up to Anas said this.
