“The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, asked, ‘Do you know what backbiting is?’ The Companions replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger, praise and peace be upon him, know best.’ He said, ‘Saying something about your brother which he would dislike.’ One of them asked, ‘But if my brother should be as I say?’ The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, ‘If he should be as you say then you have been guilty of backbiting and if he should not be as you say you are guilty of a calumny.’"

Muslim with a chain up to Abu Hurairah who related the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said this.
