“Mu'az was riding pillion behind the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, on a donkey when he asked: ‘Mu'az, do you know what right is due to Allah from His worshipers, and what right is due to a worshiper from Allah?’ Mu'az replied: ‘Allah and His Messenger, praise and peace be upon him, know best.’ He said: ‘The right due to Allah from His worshipers is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him. The right of the worshipers of Allah from Him is that He will not punish those who do not associate anything with Him.’ When Mu'az heard this he said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, can I convey this good news to the people?’ He replied: ‘Do not do this, perhaps they may come to depend upon it alone.’”
