“During a sermon given by the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, from the pulpit he spoke about charity and refraining from begging. He said: ‘The upper hand is better than the lower; the upper is the hand that spends and the lower is the one that begs.’"

Bukhari and Muslim with a chain up to ibn Omar who related this hadith.
