“When the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, reached Hijr, the land of Thamood, he warned his Companions, ‘Do not pass by these that are being punished, except with tears. If your eyes are dry do not pass near them, lest you should be afflicted with that which afflicted them.’"

We are also informed:

“When the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, passed by Hijr, he warned his Companions: ‘Do not enter the dwelling-places of those who wronged themselves except with tears in your eyes lest you are afflicted by the same affliction.’ Thereupon he covered his head and hastened the pace of his mount until he had crossed the valley.’"

Bukhari and Muslim with a chain up to ibn Omar who related that the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said this.
