“A man of the Bani A'amir told us that he asked the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, for permission to enter when he was at home, saying, ‘May I enter?’ The Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said to his attendant, ‘Go out and inform this person how to ask permission. Tell him to say, ‘Peace be on you, may I enter?' The man heard this and said, ‘Peace be upon you, may I enter?’ The Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, gave permission and he entered.”

Abu Daud with a chain up to Ribi', the son of Hirash who related that the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said this.
