I (Juray al Hujaymi) came to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, and said, ‘On you be peace O Messenger of Allah.’ He replied, ‘Do not say: On you be peace, this is the greeting of the dead.’"

Abu Daud and Tirmidhi with a chain up to Juray al Hujaymi related that the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said this.
