“The Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, what other good deed is equal to fighting in the Way of Allah?’ He replied, ‘You are incapable to do it.’

The Companions repeated the question two or three times, and each time he answered: ‘You are incapable to do it.’ He then said, ‘The example of one fights in the Way of Allah is like that of a person who fasts and prays at night obedient to the verses of Allah and neither rests from prayer nor fasting until the one who is fighting in the Way of Allah returns.’"

Bukhari and Muslim with a chain up to Abu Hurairah who related that the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said this.
