They took into consideration the trustworthiness and piety of
the narrators from the Holy Prophet, praise and peace be upon
him, down to the current narrator. They did not accept any
Hadith which was submitted unless they were fully satisfied
that it came from the Holy Prophet Muhammad, praise and peace
be upon him. To do this they applied such rules laid down
below:

It must have been clearly mentioned that such and such a thing
was said or done by the Holy Prophet, praise and peace be
upon him. The narrator stated that he was present or had heard
the Hadith uttered by the Holy Prophet, praise and peace
be upon him, or in the case of his being removed by distance
the narrators from the Holy Prophet, praise and peace be upon
