Mughiera did not know who the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, was until one day he met him walking with Abu Jahl along one of the allies of Mecca. The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said to Abu Jahl, “O Abul Hakam (another name for Abu Jahl), come to Allah and His Messenger. I am inviting you to Allah.” Abu Jahl replied, “O Muhammad, will you never refrain from insulting our gods? Do you want us to bear witness that you have conveyed the message? We then bear witness that we you have. I swear by Allah that I would have certainly followed you, if I knew what you say is the truth.” Mughiera, the son of Shu’ba narrated that upon the departure of the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, Abu Jahl said to him, “By Allah, I know for certain that whatever he says is the truth. However, there is one thing preventing me from accepting the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, and that is he belongs to the family of the Bani Qusay. When the Bani Qusay said, “Keeping the keys of the Ka’bah is our duty”, we (the other families of the Koraysh) accepted. And again, when they said, “Give water to the people who perform the pilgrimage is our duty”, we accepted. Thereafter when they said, “Chairing public meetings is our duty”, we again accepted. Then when they said, “Bearing the banner during times of war is our duty,” we accepted. After that they (the Muslims) feed the people and we also feed the people and we are almost equal that that. But, they say, “We have a Prophet among us” by Allah, I will never accept this!” WALEED, THE SON OF MUGHIERA REJECTS ISLAM Abdullah, the son of Abbas narrates that Waleed, the son of Mughiera went to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, who proceeded to recite some verses of the Koran to him. Upon hearing the recitation Waleed’s heart began to soften. When Abu Jahl learned of Waleed’s inclination he rebuked him saying, “O uncle, your people intend collecting money for you.” Waleed asked, “Why is this?” Abu Jahl replied, “They want to give it to you because you have been to Muhammad to get something from him.” Waleed responded, “But the Koraysh know very well that I am among the wealthiest of people!” “Then,” said Abu Jahl, “you will have to tell them something to let them know that you have nothing to do with Muhammad.” Waleed asked, “What should I tell them?” By Allah, none of you know as much about the poetry of the jinn than I. By Allah, what he said was exceedingly sweet, beautiful and attractive. What he said was like a flourishing tree, the top of which bears abundant fruit and the bottom of which is luxuriantly green. His words will always tower without being suppressed. His speech crushes all other speech.” Abu Jahl then said to Waleed, “Your people will never be pleased with you until you say something against him.” To this, Waleed replied, “Give me time to think about it.” After he had thought for a while, Waleed said, “This is nothing but magic revived from the past.” It was in reference to Waleed’s statement that Allah sent down the verses: ‘Leave Me alone with he whom I created and designated for him ample wealth, and sons that stand in witness. I made things smooth and easy for him, yet he is eager that I increase him. Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. I will constrain him to a hard ascent. He reflected, and then determined death seized him, how was his determining! Again, death seized him, how was his determining! Then he looked, frowned and scowled; then he retreated and grew proud and said, 'This is no more than traced sorcery; It is nothing but the word of a mortal!' I will surely roast him in the Scorching.’ Chapter 74 verses 11-16 In another narration we learn that the verse the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, recited to Waleed (which initially softened his heart a little) was: ‘Allah orders justice, and good deeds, and giving to one's kindred. He forbids indecency, dishonor and insolence. He admonishes you in order that you take heed.’ Chapter 16:90
