Shaykh Jazuli’s Introduction “Allah, and His angels praise and venerate the Prophet. O who believe, praise and venerate him and pronounce peace upon him in abundance." Koran Chapter 33:56, And Allah praised and venerated (our Master) Muhammad, his family and his Companions and gave to them peace. Praise be Allah who has guided us to belief (iman) and to Islam (ihsan is included in both) and praise and peace be upon (our Master) Muhammad, His Prophet who saved us from the worship of statues and idols. And (praise and peace be) upon his family and Companions, the honorable, the good and generous. The subject of this book is the remembrance to ask for praise and veneration upon the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, and its benefits. I mention prophetic quotations without their chains of transmission in order to make it easier for the reader to memorize; this being one of the important essentials for whosoever seeks the nearness of the Lord of lords. I have named this book “The Guide of Good Things and the Advent of Blazing Lights in the Remembrance to ask for Praise upon the Chosen Prophet”, seeking the pleasure of Allah, the High, and seeking the love for His noble Messenger, (our Master) Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate him and give him an abundance of peace. Allah is the One to be asked to enable us to follow the way of the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, and make us to be amongst those who love his perfect person, for Allah is Capable to do this. There is no god except He, and there is no good except His good, and He is the Best Protector and Best Helper, and there is neither movement nor power except through Allah, the High, the Great. 2. Chapter: The benefit of requesting praise upon the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate him, and give him peace is the command of Allah, the Mighty. Allah, the Mighty, the Glorified says, “Allah, and His angels praise and venerate the Prophet. O who believe, praise and venerate him and pronounce peace upon him in abundance." Koran Chapter 33:56 And it is related that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate and give him peace, came to us with visible signs of good tidings upon his face. He said, "Indeed, Gabriel, peace be upon him, said to me, ‘Are you not pleased, O Muhammad, that whenever one of your nation asks Allah to praise you, Allah will praise him tenfold, and that whenever one of your nation asks Allah to give you peace, Allah will give peace him tenfold.'" And the Prophet said, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, "The nearest person amongst you to me is the one who asks Allah most to praise me." Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate and give him peace, also said, "(For) whosoever asks for praise upon me, angels will praise him for long as he asks, so let him do more rather than less." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, "A person is considered a miser if, when I am mentioned in his presence he fails to supplicate for praise upon me." The Prophet of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said "Supplicate for more praise on me upon the day of Friday.” And he said, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, "Whosoever amongst my nation asks for blessings upon me once, ten good deeds are written down for him and ten sins are erased." Prophet Muhammad said, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, "Whosoever hears the call to prayer and says, ‘O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and this established prayer, give (our Master) Muhammad the nearest station, the pre-eminence, and raise him to the praised standing You have promised him,’ my intercession for him will be binding on the Day of Resurrection." And he said, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, “For whosoever asks for praise upon me in a book, the angels praise him for as long as my name is in that book.” Abu Sulayman Ad-Darani spoke of how one should make a request saying, "Whosoever wishes to request something from Allah, let him ask for the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, to be praised a lot, and then he may ask Allah about his need. Thereafter he should seal his request by asking for more praise upon the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, because Allah will accept the two requests for blessings upon the Prophet, and Allah is more Noble than to disregard whatever is between them both.” And it is related that the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, said "Whosoever asks Allah one hundred times to praise me on a Friday will be forgiven the sins of eighty years.” Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, ‘There is for whosoever asks for me to be praised a light on the Bridge (over Hell), and whosoever is on the Bridge amongst the people of light will not be among the People of the Fire.'” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, "Whosoever forgets the praising of me has indeed mistaken the Path to Paradise." By "forgets" he meant its abandoning, therefore if the one who abandons is mistaken the one who practices the praising traverses the Path of Paradise. It is related by Abdur Rahman, Awf's son, may Allah be pleased with him, that Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate him, and give him peace said, "Gabriel, peace be upon be him, came to me and said, “O Muhammad, whenever anyone of your nation asks for blessings upon you, seventy thousand angels praise him, and whosoever is blessed by angels becomes one of the people of Paradise.” And he said, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, "The one who praises me most will have the most spouses in Paradise." It is related that the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate him, and give him peace said, "Whenever someone asks for me to be praised, extolling my right, Allah, the Mighty, the Sublime creates from His Words an angel with wings that stretch from the east to the west, and with feet that are connected to the nearest part of the seventh earth and a neck bowed beneath the Throne. Allah, the Mighty, the Sublime says to him, 'Praise My worshipper as he asks for praise upon My Prophet' and thereupon the angel will praise him up to the Day of Resurrection." It is related that Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, "On the Day of Resurrection there will come to my Pool nations whom I will only recognize for their abundant asking for me to be praised.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, "Whosoever supplicates to Allah for me to be praised once, Allah will praise him ten times, and whosoever supplicates for me to be praised ten times, Allah will praise him one hundred times, and whosoever supplicates to Allah for me to be praised one hundred times Allah will praise him one thousand times, and whosoever supplicates to Allah for me to be praised one thousand times, Allah will prohibit the Fire to touch his body. His word on any matter will be made to endure in this world and the next, and Allah will let him enter Paradise and his supplication of praise upon me will come as a light for him on the Day of Judgement over the Bridge (over Hell), a walking distance of five hundred years, and for every supplication of praise he invokes, Allah will give him a palace in Paradise; let it be more rather than less.” And Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate him, and give him peace said, "Whenever a worshipper supplicates for me to be praised, his request leaves him swiftly and passes over land and sea, through east and west, saying, ‘I am the praise upon Muhammad, the Chosen, the best of the creation of Allah, supplicated for by so and so’ and everything supplicates for praise upon me. A bird is created from these praises with seventy thousand wings, each of which has seventy thousand feathers. Each feather has seventy thousand faces. Each face has seventy thousands mouths and in every mouth there are seventy thousand tongues. Each tongue glorifies Allah, the Exalted in seventy thousand languages and Allah will then write for him the reward for all of that." Ali, Abi Talib's son, may Allah be pleased with him, tells us that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, ‘For whosoever asks Allah to praise me one hundred times on the day of Friday, a light will come for him on the Day of Resurrection, a light which, if it were to be divided among them, would be sufficient for the whole of creation’.” It is mentioned in the good tidings, "It is written on the leg of the Throne ‘Whosoever yearns for Me, I am merciful to him. Whosoever asks Me, I will give him his wish. Whosoever draws near to Me, by asking for praise upon Muhammad, I will forgive his sins, even if they are as plentiful as the bubbles on the surface of the ocean’.” And it is related by one of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, "A beautiful fragrance rises that reaches the clouds in the sky when a gathering supplicates for praise upon (our Master) Muhammad, praise and veneration be upon him, and the angels say, ‘This is a gathering in which Muhammad has been praised, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace’.” Other reports mention, "The gates of the heavens are opened for a believing worshipper, male or female, who begins by asking for praise upon Muhammad, and the pavilions are opened as far as the Throne, and there is not one single angel that does not praise Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate him, and ask for forgiveness for that worshipper for as long as Allah wishes.” Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, "Whosoever is troubled by any matter should increase his asking for me to be praised, and his anxieties, sorrows and concerns will be removed, and his provision will increase and his needs satisfied.” And one of the righteous said, "A neighbor of mine who was a scribe, died. I saw him in a vision and asked him how Allah had treated him. He replied, ‘He has forgiven me’. I asked, ‘For what reason did He forgive you?’ and he replied, ‘Whenever I wrote the name of Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, in a book, I asked Allah to praise him and for this my Lord has given me what no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard and what no mortal has ever imagined’.” Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, tells us that Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, said, "None of you truly believe until I am dearer to him than his own self, his wealth, his children, his parents and all other people.” And it is related in the quotation of Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said to Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate him, "You are dearer to me, O Messenger of Allah, than everything I possess except my own self which is within me.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, replied, "You will not be a believer until I am dearer to you than your own self." Omar replied, "By Him who revealed to you the Book, you are dearer to me than my own self.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate him, replied, "Omar, now your faith is complete.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, was asked, "When will I attain belief?" (in another rendering, "When will I attain true belief?") He replied, “When you love Allah" it was said, “And when will I love Allah?" He answered, “When you love His Messenger." Then it was asked, “And when will I love His Messenger?" He replied, "When you follow his path, adhere to his way, love what he loves and hate what he hates, befriend whom he befriends and oppose whom he opposes – and people will vary in belief according to their degree of love for me, and people will vary in disbelief according to their degree of hatred of me.” Attention! There is no belief for those who do not have love for him. Attention! There is no belief for those who do not have love for him. Attention! There is no belief for those who do not have love for him. It was said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, “We see believers who are humble and believers who are not humble. What is the reason for this?" He replied, “It is because whosoever finds sweetness in his faith is humble whereas the other does not.” It was said, "How can we find such faith, or obtain it, or earn it?" He replied, “By sincerely loving Allah.” It was asked, “How can the love of Allah be found or earned?" He replied, “By loving His Messenger.” So seek the pleasure of Allah and the pleasure of His Messenger by loving them.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, was asked, "Who are the family of (our Master) Muhammad whom we are ordered to love and honor, and treat with reverence?" He replied, “The people of purity and fidelity, who sincerely believe in me.” It was said, “What are their signs?" He answered, “They prefer my love to the love of any other and their inner life is busy with remembering me after remembering Allah" (In another version the words are, “Their signs are being addicted to my remembrance and constantly ask for me to be praised.”) It was said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, “Who is he that is strong in believing in you?" He replied, “The one who believes in me without seeing me, for he is a believer in me through yearning and is sincere in his love for me. A sign of this is that he longs to see me by sacrificing everything he owns (in another version it reads, “…than the weight of the earth in gold"). This is a true believer in me, whose love for me is true and sincere.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, was asked, “Are you aware of those who ask for praise upon you who are not present and will come after you? What is their status?" He replied, “I hear the praise of people who love me and I know them. As for the praising of other than them, it is presented to me.” 2. Allah has praised (our Master) and sponsor Muhammad, his family and given peace. The following is a description of the blessed Paradise (Rawdah) in which the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate him, lies. In close proximity to his tomb lie the caliphs Abu Bakr and Omar, Al Khattab's son, may Allah be pleased with them. Urwa, As-Zubair's son, a Companion of the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate him, mentioned that the tomb of the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate him, lies in an alcove whereas that of Abu Bakr is behind the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate him, whilst the tomb of Omar, Al Khattab's son lies at the feet of Abu Bakr. On the eastern side of the alcove an empty space remains and it is narrated in the quotations of Prophet Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate him, that Prophet Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him, will be buried there. Lady Ayesha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “I saw three moons descend into my room. I mentioned my vision to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, who told me, 'O Ayesha, this means there will be three buried in your house and they are the best of all the people of the earth.’ When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and venerate, and give him peace, passed away, he was buried in my room, whereupon Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me, 'This is one your moons and he is the best of them'", may Allah praise and venerate him and his family, and give peace in abundance.” 4. O Allah, indeed I have committed sins between me and You, and there are sins between me and Your creation. O Allah, what is this for You, so forgive them, and whatever there is concerning Your creation, bear them for me and enrich me with Your Virtue, for Your forgiveness is widespread. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad, in the number of leaves on the trees. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad in the number of the bubbles and ripples upon the sea. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad, in the number of the rivers. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad, in the number of grains of sand in the desert and in the wilderness. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad in the number of the weight of the mountains and rocks. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad, in the number of dwellers of Paradise and dwellers of the Fire. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad in the number of the righteous and the corrupt. And, praise (our Master) Muhammad and the family of (our Master) Muhammad in the number at which nights and days alternate. O Allah, make our praise upon him a shield that gives us protection from the punishment of the Fire and a means of us gaining permission to enter the Abode of Permanence, for indeed You are the Mighty, the Forgiving. Allah has praised our Master Muhammad and his virtuous family, his blessed descendants, his honored Companions and his wives the Mothers of the Believers. Such praise that is continual and frequent until the Day of Judgement. O Allah, praise the Master of the righteous, the adornment of the messengers, the choicest and most noble ever to have been cloaked in the darkness of the night, or bathed in the light of the day. O Allah, O Owner of Generosity, whose Strength and Might are unequalled, and whose Mercy and Virtue are beyond compare, we ask You and nobody else except You, to loosen our tongues during the questioning, and give us success in doing good deeds, and let us be among the trustworthy on the Day of Convulsions and Earthquakes, O Owner of Might and Glory. I ask You, O Light of the light for that which was before time and eternity. You are the Abiding with no end, the Rich with no equal, the Holy, the Pure, the High, the Conqueror, the One who is neither encompassed by space nor contained by time. I ask You with all of Your finest Names and with the greatest Names to You, and the most noble of them to You, and of them the most plentiful reward with You, and that which invoke the promptest response from You, and with Your protected and hidden Name, the Most Exalted of the Exalted, the Greatest of the Great, the Most Magnificent of the Magnificent, the one which You love, and are pleased with whosoever calls upon You with it, and that You respond to his/her supplication. I ask You, O Allah, with that there is no god except You, the Kind, the Merciful, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Owner of Glory and Honor, Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Great, the Exalted. I ask You with Your Greatest Name in which when we supplicate, our supplication is accepted, and with which if You are asked You give. And I ask You with Your Name that humbles to its might, the mighty, kings, lions, reptiles and everything You have created. O Allah, O Lord, accept my supplication. O You to whom the Majesty and Omnipotence belong, O Master of Sovereignty and Kingdoms, You who are the Living who never dies, exaltations be to You Lord. What is greater than Your Rank, higher than Your Position! You are my Lord, O Holy One in His Omnipotence, I ask You and I fear You. O Great, O Majestic, O Powerful. O Almighty, O Strong, You have blessed Yourself O Great, You have exalted Yourself O Knowing, exaltations be to You O Great, exaltations be to You. O Splendid, I ask You with Your Great, Perfect and Majestic Name not to give dominion over me to the tyrant, the stubborn, the rebellious satan, the envious, the weak among Your creation, the oppressor, the ruinous, the corrupter, the slave, or the tempter. O Allah, I ask You and I bear witness that You are Allah, and there is no god except You, the One, the Only, the Eternal, the One who neither begets nor was begotten, and there is none equal to You, O He. O the One who there is no other except He. O the One who there is no god except He. O Infinite, O Eternal, O Destiny, O Everlasting. O the One who is the Living who does not die. O our God and God of everything, one God, there is no god except You. O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower, of the unseen and the seen, the Merciful, the Most Merciful, the Living, the Everlasting, the Judge, the Benefactor, the Munificent, the Reviver, the Inheritor, the Owner of Glory and Honor. The hearts of all creation are in Your hands, their foreheads towards You, for You plant goodness in their hearts and You erase evil from them as You will. So I ask You, O Allah, that You erase from my heart everything that You hate and fill my heart with fear of You, knowledge of You, awe of You, longing for what is with You, and security and well-being, and have pity on us with mercy and blessings from You, and inspire in us that which is sound and wise. Therefore I ask You, O Allah, for the knowledge of those who fear, the repentance of the humble, the sincerity of those who are certain, the thanking of the patient, and the penitence of the sincere. And I ask You, O Allah, by the light of Your Face, which fills every corner of Your Throne, that You plant knowledge of You in my heart until I know You best in Your knowledge, as You ought to be known. And Allah has praised our Master Muhammad, the Seal of the prophets, the Leader of the messengers, his family and Companions and gives peace in abundance, and praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. (End of daily readings: Al Jazuli starts the reading on a Tuesday and concludes on a Monday) i. Translator’s Notes: Al Jazuli was a very pious man and the foremost Judge of his town. One day, while on a journey he became very thirsty and also needed to renew his ablution but his water skin was empty and there was no water in sight. In his search for water he found a well however, the well had neither a bucket nor rope with which to draw the water. Al Jazuli was very distressed by the situation, the water was so near and yet so far, and he did not know what to do. Shortly after finding the well a young girl approached and upon realizing Al Jazuli’s dilemma spat dry air into the well and the water miraculous rose to the top. Al Jazuli was astounded by this miracle and asked the girl how such a miracle was possible. To this she replied “I was able to do this through my asking Allah for peace and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad.” Having witnessed the blessed benefit of asking for blessings upon the Prophet, may Allah praise and venerate him, and give him peace. Al Jazuli decided to compose Dala’il ul-Khayrat by gathering and selecting material from a multitude of authentic Islamic references that praise and supplicate for blessings upon the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him. When one reads these supplications on the Prophet, praise and veneration be upon him, Allah showers not only His Prophet with blessings but also its reader. This great work has been, and still is acclaimed by all the lovers of Prophet Muhammad, praise and veneration be upon him, as being the foremost book to praise him. Dalail was later explained by Imam Al-Fasi and subsequently all authentic references were added at the end of each statement in his famous explanation of Dalail. However, one must not suppose that this work contains all the authentic prayers that praise the Prophet, they are so numerous that they would exhaust volumes of writing; but they are the most precious. The style of Imam Al Jazuli’s presentation is uniquely his own and scented with musk in sincere love of the Prophet, praise and veneration be upon him. His writing flows both swiftly yet with smoothness at an exhilarating pace and has attracted many learned Muslim scholars, including Imam Yusuf, son of Ishmael an-Nabahani, to write books that expound its deeper meaning and enriches one’s understanding. Such is the love for this blessed book that Muslim scholars of various tongues such as Urdu felt the compelling urge to translate it into their native language so that their people may praise the Prophet in the best manner and be blessed by its reading. Another pleasing feature of this book is that its introduction contains the most beautiful Names of Allah, as well as the blessed names of our beloved Prophet, one of which is Dalaail ul Khayrat . The book is presented in eight parts. It is highly recommended that one commences its weekly reading on a Tuesday with the introduction to Part 1. Each part is read on its given day and thereby eases its completion in a week. Each part takes approximately ten to twenty minutes. Many a traveler on the Spiritual Path has selected to make Dalail ul Khayrat their daily voluntary supplication. For those interested in reading the Arabic text alone we would like to point out that in the traditional Islamic style of Arabic references, one finds the original text printed in the center of the page surrounded by a wide border that separates it from the scholarly treasures written outside. Treasures such as Hizbun Nasr, Hizb ul Barr, and Hizb ul Bahr of Imam Abdul Hasan Shazili, Hizb of Imam an-Nawawi, Hizb of Mulla Ali al Qaari, Hizb ud Dauril A’laa of Shaykh ul Akbar Muhyuddin ibn al Arabi, Hizb of Ustadh al Bayyumi, Assalaat ul Mashishiyya of Imam Abdu Salaam ibn Mashish, and Qasida Al Munfarija, among other additional voluntary supplications to Allah. Can Qasidatul Burda of Imam al Buseeri Rahmatullahi ‘alaih (more accurately called Qasidatul Bor'a meaning "cure", as the poem of Ka'b, the Companion is the original Burda) ever be left out! Such works naturally bring the book to a resounding finale. The Grand Muhaddith of Morocco, the late Sidi Abdullah Ben Seddek – who was the teacher of this translator – said that after the Koran, this book was the most read book in the Muslim world. He narrated an incident in which a French spy was sent to Algeria to get a copy of the Koran. He found so many people reading Dalaail ul Khayrat that he assumed it to be the Koran and took it back to France where it was translated! Unfortunately, last century a misguided cult, often called Wahabi or *Salafi, arose from the Najd area in Saudi Arabia. This cult denounces the abundant praise and veneration of the Prophet, claiming it to be an innovation and subsequently denounces this great work. Their flawed doctrine deliberately overlooks and attempts to negate the direct statement of Allah in the Koran that says: “Allah, and His angels praise and venerate the Prophet. O who believe, praise and venerate him and pronounce peace upon him in abundance.” Chapter 33:56. One of the translators of this work, (Ahmad Darwish Alshaykh) has the full explanation of this great work in Arabic which is supported by proofs from the Koran together with authentic prophetic quotations evidenced in the work of Al Fasi. It is among his dearest wishes to translate this work and guide those who have been misled by the ignorance of the Wahabi/Salafi cult back to the Straight Path. *The Wahabi's often call them "Salafi". This word is a term applicable to the first three generations of Muslims of whom the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, referred to as being the best generations of this nation, and as such the name is relevant only to them, and therefore not applicable to any other generation. The Wahabi cult emerged 700 years after the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, and usurped this titled by calling themselves "Salafi". The rightful Salafi of the first three generations were well known for the magnitude of their zikr (remembrance of Allah) and also for praising the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, of which the Wahabi cult shun and condemningly refer to as being an "innovation" - bidda. “And if you see your ego controlling you, and it comes to lead you into the Fire of Desires, banish its desires by continuous blessing. There is nothing to compare with Dala’il ul-Khayrat, with Dala’il ul-Khayrat you must be firm, read it to obtain your wishes, lights appear and blaze thereby. O my brethren, it is never to be abandoned.” Personal Note: In 2006 a translator and his wife were blessed to visit the tomb of Al Jazuli in Morocco. Khadeijah read the daily reading in English before the tomb and upon its conclusion she smelt a truly beautiful aroma coming from the tomb. It was after Isha prayer and time to catch the coach. They greeted Al Jazuli before departing and as they walked to the coach station, the same beautiful aroma kept accompanying them in wafts until they reached the coach station. Al Hamdulillah. Background information: The Title: The full title of this book is "Dala’il ul-Khayrat Wa Shawaariq ul Anwaar Fee Zikris Salaat Alan Nabiyyi’l Mukhtaar" - frequently referred to as Dala'il ul-Khayrat. The translated title is "Proofs or Guides of Good Deeds and the Brilliant Burst of Sunshine in the Mentioning of Blessings on the Chosen Prophet". Al Jazuli’s lineage and education: His full name was Abu Abdullah Muhammad, son of Suleiman, son of Abi Bakr Al-Jazuli Al-Simlali. He was a descendant of Prophet Muhammad, praise and veneration be upon him, via his grandson Hasan, son of Ali, may Allah be pleased with them. Al Jazuli belonged to the Berber tribe of Jazula that settled in the Sus area of Morocco which lies between the Atlantic ocean and the Atlas mountains. When he was young he studied in Sus, then continued his studies in the Madrasat As-Saffareen in Fez. After the completion of his studies in the Madrasat he left Fez and spent the next forty years between Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. It was after this period that he returned to Fez where he was blessed to complete his great work - Dala’il ul Khayrat. The Sufi Shadhili Path: Al Jazuli was initiated into the Shadhili Path (Tariqa) by Sharif Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Amghar. He spent fourteen years in seclusion and then went to Safi where we are told by Al-Habib Abdullah, son of Alawi, son of Hasan al Attas in his book “The Way of Bani ‘Alawi” that Al Jazuli had twelve thousand followers, whom he led deeper into the love of Allah and His Prophet, praise and veneration be upon him. The date of his death is uncertain however, it occurred between the years 869-873 AH during an obligatory prayer. In the Encyclopedia of Islam, 1957 Leiden, it is reported that seventy-seven years after his death his body was exhumed for reburial in Marrakesh and his body had not decomposed. (For ease of reading these supplications have been organized into 7 parts – a reading for each day of the week. It is highly recommended that the reader continues its reading for the rest of his/her life).
