THE CONVERSION OF DHI JOWSHIN DHABABI BASHEER, SON OF KHASAIYAH UNNAMED PERSON ABU QUHAFA COMPANIONS OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD Praise and peace be upon him Hayatus Sahabah by Muhadith Kandahlawi (Kandhelvi) Rendered into current English by Khadeijah Abdullah Darwish (Anne Stephens) Free give away Acquired from Amazon’s Kindle Not for sale or resale by any third party ©2013 - www.Muhammad.com THE CONVERSION OF DHI JOWSHIN DHABABI Dhi Jowshin Dhababi spoke of the time he embraced Islam saying, “I went to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon, after the Battle of Badr, taking with me the foal of Qar’ha my horse. I said to the Messenger of Allah, ‘O Muhammad I have brought with me my horse’s foal so that you may use it for yourself.’ The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, graciously replied, ‘I have no need for it, however, if you wish to exchange it for a suit of armor from the Battle of Badr you may choose which ever one you wish.” I replied, “I am not prepared to exchange this pedigree horse today.” And the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, politely told him that he had no need of it. Then he said, “O Dhi Jowshin, why don’t you accept Islam and be among those who are the first to accept Islam?” I replied that I did not want to. Whereupon the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, ask why. I replied, “It is because I see your people are upset with you.” The Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, asked me how I received the news of the defeat of the unbelievers at Badr. I told him that I had heard all the news. The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, “We will guide you.” I replied, “I will accept Islam when you take control of the Ka’bah and start living there.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, “If you are still alive, you shall indeed see it.” Then the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, turned to Bilal and said, “O Bilal, take this man’s bag and fill it with Ajwa dates as provision for his journey.” As I was about to leave I heard the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, say to his Companions, “He is the finest horseman of the Banu Amir tribe.” Dhi Jowshin continued his story saying, “By Allah, I was with my family in Ghowr when a rider arrived and I asked him what was going on in Mecca. He replied, ‘By Allah, Muhammad has taken control of the Ka’bah and is living there.’ When I heard this I said to myself, ‘If only my mother had lost me as a child, if only I had accepted Islam that day. If I had asked the Messenger of Allah to give me the area of Hira, he would have given it to me.’ In another narration, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, asked Dhi Jowshin, “What prevents you from accepting Islam?” I replied, “I see that your people belie you and have exiled you (from Mecca) and are now at war with you. I shall observe future developments. If you gain the upper hand over your people, I will accept Islam and follow you. However, if they get the upper hand, I will not follow you.” THE CONVERSION OF BASHEER, SON OF KHASASIYAH Basheer, the son of Khasasiyah spoke of the time he embraced Islam saying, “The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, asked me what my name was and I replied Nadheer.” He gave me a new name and told me that from that day onward, “Your name shall be Basheer.” From that time onward the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, invited me to stay in the Suffa (which was a raised platform within the Prophet’s mosque where those with no home or family lived). It was the practice of the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, to share the gifts he received with the people of the Suffa and would also give them any charity he received. One night, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, left his home and Basheer followed him. The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, went to the cemetery (called the Baqee) and greeted its inhabitants and Basheer said, “I heard him say, ‘Peace be upon you, O home of believers! Soon we shall be joining you. We all belong to Allah and will return to Him. You inhabitants have indeed met with extreme good and saved from immense evil.’ After that, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, turned to ask who was there and so I told him it was I. The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said to me, “Doesn’t it please you that Allah has diverted your hearing, heart and sight to Islam whereas before you were among the tribe of Rabee’ah who breed fine horses and claimed that the earth would be turned upside down had it not been for them?” Basheer replied, “That is so, O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him.” Then the Messenger of Allah asked me what had brought me there. I replied, “I was afraid that some calamity might befall you or that some creatures might harm you.” THE CONVERSION OF UNNAMED PERSONS A tribesman from the tribe of Baladawiyah narrated the following from his grandfather. “As I was coming from Medina, I pitched my tent in a valley where two people were trading. The buyer was saying to the seller, “Give me a fair deal in this purchase.” I said to myself, “Could this be the Hashimi (referring to the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, whose ancestor was Hashim) who is misleading his people?” I continued to watch and saw another man approach. He was extremely handsome having a broad forehead, slender nose, fine eyebrows and a black line of hair that ran from his chest down to his navel wearing two old sheets of cloth. He greeted us with “As-Salaamu alaykum” and we responded to his greeting. Upon his arrival the buyer said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, tell this merchant to give me a fair deal.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, raised his hands and said, “You people are the owners of your merchandise. All I want is to meet Allah on the Day of Judgement without any of you claiming from me any wealth, blood or honor that I may have wrongfully taken from you. Allah showers His mercy on a person who is lenient when he sells, lenient when he buys, lenient when he takes, lenient when he gives, lenient when he pays his debts and lenient when he asks for payment.” Thereafter the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, left the traders and I said to myself, “By Allah, I must certainly find out more about this man because his words are excellent.” I followed after him and called out, “O Muhammad” whereupon he turned around to face me and inquired as to my need. I asked, “Are you the person who has misled your people, destroyed them and stopped them from worshiping what their forefathers worshipped?” He replied, “That is Allah.” I asked, “To what are you calling people?” He replied, “I am calling them to Allah, what have you to say?” I asked for more and he said, “It is that you bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is His worshipper and Messenger, and that you believe in everything that has been sent down to me, that you renounce Laat and Uzza, establish your prayer, and pay the obligatory charity (zakat).” I asked what is the ‘obligatory charity’, he replied, “It is wealth that our rich give to our poor.” I responded saying, “These are excellent things you are calling people toward.” Before that time, there was no one on earth whom I hated more than the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him. Thereafter he became more beloved to me than even my children, parents and all mankind. I told the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, “I have understood.” He asked me if indeed I had understood, and I replied that I had. Then the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, asked me, “Do you bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that I, Muhammad am the Messenger of Allah, and do you believe in everything that has been revealed to me?” “Yes” I replied. Then I spoke to him about an oasis in which there was a settlement of many people and asked if I may go and invite them toward that which he had invited me. I told him I felt they would wish to follow him. The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, replied saying, ”Yes, you may go and invite them.” Soon after, all the men and women of the oasis embraced Islam and the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, patted me on my head. THE CONVERSION OF UNNAMED PERSON FROM THE TRIBE OF BANU NAJR Anas, the son of Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, was visiting a man from the tribe of Banu Najar when he said to a man, “O uncle, say, ‘Laa Ilaaha Illalaah’. The man asked, “Am I your maternal or paternal uncle?” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, replied, “You are my maternal uncle, please say ‘Laa Ilaaha Illalaah’. The man asked, "Will this be good for me?” “Indeed” replied the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him. THE CONVERSION OF A JEWISH BOY Anas narrated how the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, visited a Jewish boy who used to serve him that had been stricken with illness. He sat by the boy’s head and said to him, “Accept Islam”. The boy looked at his father who was there and his father told him, “Obey Abul Qasim (the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him). The boy accepted Islam and as the Messenger of Allah was about to leave the house he said, “All praise is for Allah, who has used me to save him from Hell.” … Anas also narrated that the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said to a certain person, “Accept Islam and you will remain in peace” The person replied, “But I dislike it!” Whereupon the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, “Even though you dislike it.” THE CONVERSION OF ABU QUHAFA Asma, the daughter of Abu Bakr narrated that on the day of the Opening of Mecca, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said to Abu Quhafa (father of Abu Bakr), “Accept Islam and remain in peace.” Asma, the daughter of Abu Bakr also reported that when the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, entered Mecca on the day of its opening, he was sitting peacefully near the Ka’bah when Abu Bakr brought his father Abu Quhafa to him. When the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, saw him, he said, “O Abu Bakr, why did you not leave this respected man and take me to him instead (of bringing him to me)?” Abu Bakr, replied, “O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, it is more fitting that he comes to you rather than you go to him.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, invited Abu Quhafa to sit down in front of him, and placed his hand upon the elderly man’s heart and said, “O Abu Quhafa, accept Islam and remain in peace.” Thereupon Abu Quhafa accepted and testified to his belief in Islam. When Abu Quhafa was presented to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, his hair and beard were as white as the Thughama’ plant. The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, advised him saying, “Change the color of your hair, but do not color it black.” May Allah be pleased with all the Companions.
