(Aisha) she said: In the past the Prophet - Peace and blessing be upon him - sent Abdulloh bin Rowaachah to the Jews so he estimated their dates when the fruit was good before they were eaten then he gave the choice to the Jews whether they would take it with that estimate or hand it over to them with that estimate? It's just that the Prophet - Peace and blessing be upon him - ordered to estimate so that he could calculate the zakat before the fruit was eaten and distributed.

If you estimate then take it (i.e. estimate the whole) or leave a third and if you do not leave a third then leave a quarter (i.e. for the owner's needs).

(Ali bin Abi Talib) he reported that Abbas - may Allah be pleased with him - asked the Messenger of Allah - Peace and blessing be upon him - about hastening zakat before it was due so he allowed him to do so.
