Someone said: Truly I will give charity. He went out with his alms and put it in the hands of the thief. The next morning people were talking about it: giving that alms to a thief. The man said: O Allah, only to You is all praise, I will give charity. Then he comes out with his alms and is placed in the hands of the adulteress. Tomorrow morning people will say: the alms were handed over last night to an adulteress. The man said: O Allah, only to you all praise (alms given) on an adulteress woman, I will give alms back. Then he went out with his alms so he put it in the hands of a rich man. The next day the people spoke: the alms were given to the rich. The man said: O Allah, yours is all praise for the thief, the adulterer and the rich man. Then he was approached and it was said to him: As for your alms to the thief, may he guard himself from stealing, as for the adulterer so that he may guard against his adultery, and as for the rich man, may he take lessons and spend from some of what Allah has given him.
