We compiled the Qur'aan from the fronds of dates.

from Zaid bin Thabit said, Abu Bakr sent someone to meet me because of the many victims who died in the battle of Yamamah, when Abu Bakr was with Umar. Abu Bakr said; 'Umar came to me and said; 'The victims of war have spread to the war of Yamamah to take away the qurra` (memorizers) of the Qur'an, and I am afraid that the death of the Qur'an in many places will cause many verses of the Qur'an to be lost, and I think if you are ordered to collect the Qur'an. ' So I answered; 'How can I do something that the Messenger of Allah has never done? ' Umar immediately expressed his opinion; 'By Allah, this is a good deed, 'Umar never ceased to encourage me to do this work, until Allah opened my chest to do the work that Umar's chest had already been opened for him, and I agree with Umar's opinion.' Zaid said, Abu Bakr said; 'Truly you are a young man, intelligent, and we do not doubt your ability at all, because you are used to writing revelations for the Messenger of Allah. So follow the Qur'an (which is still scattered) and collect it.' So Zaid replied; "By Allah, if Abu Bakr assigned me to move a mountain, it would not be more difficult for me than tasking me to collect the Qur'an. So I said: 'How can you both do something that the Messenger of Allah (sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) never did?' Abu Bakr replied; 'by Allah, this work is good.' Abu Bakr never stopped motivating my consideration until Allah opened my chest to do something that Allah had opened the chest of Abu Bakr and Umar to do it. And I agree with both of them, so I searched the Koran which was scattered and I gathered from leaves, leather, pottery, the bones and breasts of the memorizers, and I found at the end of the letter at taubah the verse that reads: 'There has come to you an apostle of your own kind,,,, until the end of the verse (Surat Attaubah) with Khuzaimah or Abu Khuzaemah, so I include it in Then this shuhuf (manuscript of the original recording of the Koran) was in Abu Bakr during his life until Allah passed him, then the existence of this shuhuf with Umar 'azza wajalla during his life until Allah passed him, then on Hafshah bint Umar.' Muhammad bin Ubaidullah said; the meaning of al likaf is pottery (burned clay).
