cloak. As soon as she saw me, she said, “Welcome
Abdelwahid!” Then she asked, “What brings you here?”
Whereupon, I replied, “So that you may admonish me.”
She commented, “I exclaim, for an admonisher who seeks
admonition … Be aware that if a worshipper is sufficed,
then longs for something [more] of this lower life, Allah
will take away from him the sweetness of [zuhd] being
materially disinclined, thereby he will continue to be
confused, wandering. However, if he has a credit with
Allah, Allah will make his fault known to him in secret so
he may be reproved, saying, “My worshipper, I intended to
raise you in rank in the assembly of My angels, and to
make you a guide for My friends (awlia), and rightousness’
leader to the people of My obediance. However, when you
inclined to the lower life, and abandoned Me, I caused you
to inherit this loneliness after being in the company, and
humiliation after honor, and poverty after richness.
Therefore, return to how you were before, then I will let
