For nearly six months beginning with Rajab 488 A.H. (⁼July 1095 A.D.), I
was continuously tossed about between the attractions of worldly desires
and the impulses towards eternal life. In that month the matter ceased to
be one of choice and became one of compulsion. Allah caused my tongue
to dry up so that I was prevented from lecturing. One particular day I would
make an effort to lecture in order to gratify the hearts of my following, but
my tongue would not utter a single word nor could I accomplish anything at
all.
This impediment in my speech produced grief in my heart, and at the
same time my power to digest and assimilate food and drink was
impaired; I could hardly swallow or digest a single mouthful of food. My
powers became so weakened that the doctors gave up all hope of
successful treatment. `This trouble arises from the heart‟, they said, `and
from there it has spread through the constitution; the only method of
treatment is that the anxiety which has come over the heart should be
allayed‟.
