(d) a reason based on the practice of those who are popularly described
as having knowledge.

For a time I went after individual men, questioning those who fell short in
observing the Law. I would question one about his doubts and investigate
his inmost beliefs. `Why is it‟, I said, `that you fall short in that? If you
believe in the future life and, instead of preparing for it, sell it in order to buy
this world, then that is folly! You do not normally sell two things for one; how
can you give up an endless life for a limited number of days? If, on the other
hand, you do not believe in it, then you are an infidel! Dispose yourself to
faith. Observe what is the cause of your hidden unbelief, for that is the
doctrinal system you inwardly adopt and the cause of your outward daring,
even though you do not give expression to it out of respect towards the faith
and reverence for the mention of the law!‟

One would say: `If it were obligatory to observe this matter, then those
learned in religious questions would be foremost in doing so; but, among
