In reply to those who through philosophy have corrupted their faith to the
extent of denying prophecy in principle, we have discussed the reality of
prophecy and how it exists of necessity, by showing that there exists a
knowledge of the properties of medicines, stars, and so forth. We
introduced this preliminary study precisely for this purpose; we based the
demonstration on medical and astronomical properties precisely because
these are included in the science of the Philosophers. To every one who is
expert in some branch of science, be it astronomy, medicine, physics,
magic, or charm-making, we offer proof of prophecy based on his own
branch of science.
The man who verbally professes belief in prophecy, but equates the
prescriptions of the revealed scriptures with philosophical wisdom, really
disbelieves in prophecy and believes only in a certain philosopher whose
influence draws adherents. This is not prophecy at all. On the contrary, faith
in prophecy is to acknowledge the existence of a sphere beyond reason;
into this sphere an eye penetrates whereby man apprehends special
objects-of-apprehension. From these reason is excluded in the same way
