affirmation of Divine Oneness from the taints and stains of associating others
with Him.

Fourthly, the recipient should be a person who has remained anonymous and
kept his need to himself, not being given to fuss and complaint; or one of those
magnanimous people who, though fortune has departed, still remain unaffected
and preserve their high standards. Allah, the Almighty has said:

“…The ignorant take them to be rich because of their abstinence. But you can
recognize them by their signs. They do not persistently beg people. …” (Koran
Ch. 2 verse 273)

In other words, they do not make a nuisance of themselves by begging, for they
are rich in their certainty and proud in their fortitude. Such men should be sough
out by thorough investigation of the religious people in each neighborhood, and
by looking deeply into the circumstances of good and decent people, since the
reward for addressing charity to them is many times greater than for spending on
