It was through these questions the imam tries to strike the balance between the
spiritual and material aspects of his life and that of society. On this account he
devoted his life to the best methodology while keeping both the spiritual and
material intake of their richness thereby rendering them uncontaminated, spoiled
or manipulated so that people might start to attach themselves to him and ask
him many questions since this is the cure for everyone.

With this in mind he made the decision to write this book and no longer remain
silent, because of the responsibility to speak, as well as warn, had been imposed
upon him through the persistent straying from the clear truth, and by the
insistence of people fostering evil, flattering ignorance, and stirring up opposition
to the truth.

By writing this book, Al Ghazali fulfills the prescription of Allah that not only
guides one to the purification of the self, but reforms the heart that has become
dissipated in despair of prevention and remedy, thereby distancing one‟s self
from the company of the Law-giver (Muhammad, may Allah praise and venerate
him) who said:
