In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Letter #4
To His Excellency Nizamuddin Fakhrul Mulk
I have already told you in a previous letter, that according to the saying of the Holy
Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, flattering titles are hated by pious Muslims: "I,
as well as the humble and those in my community who fear Allah have nothing to do
with pomp or power." Some people give the name of title to their lusts and all senseless
customs as love and regard.
Those who cling fanatically to the titles rapidly lose touch with the inner spirit and life
which make religion a reality. When a man reaches the height of his splendor, it is
immaterial whether you praise him or not. If someone called Imam Shaf'i as Khawaja
Imam Shafi'i, or Imam Abu Hanifa as Khawaja Imam Abu Hanifa, he can be safely
accused of trying to advertise those who do not stand in need of advertisement. It is
