and safeguards it against the confusion of innovators by different kinds of argumentation. For the
layman is swayed by the argument of the innovator although the argument may be false; and to
confront a false position with another refutes it. People are expected to follow this belief
which we have
already mentioned because the Religion has ordained it for the good of their temporal and spiritual
lives
and because the good early generations agreed on it.
The learned are expected to watch over it for the ordinary people against the ambiguities of the
innovators, just as the magistrates are expected to safeguard their property against the attacks of
the
oppressors and ravishers.
