The Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, prophesied the coming of Imam Shafi‟i and
told his Companions that a knowledgeable man of Koraysh who would fill the plains of
the earth with knowledge. Imam Shafi‟i was a genius and surpassed his teacher Imam
Malik in his collection of prophetic sayings (hadith). To illustrate this, Imam Malik‟s book

„Muwatta‟ reports 700 hadith, whereas Imam Shafi‟i, reports over 5200 statements of the
Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, and his Companions in his book „Al Umm‟ (the
Mother of Knowledge) and also lists all the verses relating to jurisprudence in the Koran.

Imam Shafi‟i had a great impact on the Hanafi and Maliki schools of jurisprudence, which
brought about their incorporation of more hadith. It can be said that Imam Shafi‟i put
these schools in check to qualify each paragraph of jurisprudence with its basis in the
Koran.
