The Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, and his Companions suffered greatly under
the hands of the Koraysh, simply because they worshipped Allah alone and renounced
the idols worshiped in and around Ka‟bah.
Amongst the heirarchy of the Koraysh the foremost adversaries to the Prophet‟s
preaching were Omar, son of Khattab and Amr, Hisham's son, better known as Abu Jahl
which means „Father of Ignorance‟. Hamza had embraced Islam and this had
strengthened the position of the Muslims but their persecution persisted.
