as to be the first to reach him. Omar arrived shortly thereafter, and said, “Here is Abu
Sufyan, Allah has handed him over with neither a truce nor amnesty, allow me to
execute him.” Abbas intervened saying, “O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be
upon him, I have granted Abu Sufyan my protection” whereupon Omar continued to
protest. Abbas retorted, “Enough Omar, had he been from your tribe, you would not
have spoken like this. You say this because you know he belongs to the tribe of Banu
Abd Manaf.” Omar, replied, “O Abbas, your acceptance of Islam pleased the Messenger
of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, more than if my father Khatab had embraced
Islam.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, then said to Abbas,
“Take him to your tent and in the morning bring him back to me.” And so Abu Sufyan
spent that night secure in the tent of Abbas. The following morning, Abbas took Abu
Sufyan to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him.
Upon their arrival, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said to Abu
Sufyan, “Shame on you, O Abu Sufyan, isn‟t it time for you to bear witness that there is
no god except Allah?” Abu Sufyan replied, “May my parents be sacrificed for you, you
are so noble, lenient and good toward your relatives. Until now I had reservations about
this. I am now convinced that had there been any god other than Allah, he would have
surely come to my assistance.” Abbas spoke saying, “Shame on you, O Abu Sufyan,
