THE SUFFERING OF KHABAB, SON OF ARAT

Imam Sha‟bi narrates that when Omar asked Khabab about the torture he suffered at the
hands of the unbelievers he replied, “O Prince of Believers, look at my back.” Omar said,
“I have never seen anything like this before.” Khabab told him, “They made a fire and
(threw me down on it) there was nothing to extinguish it.”

Abu Layla Kindi narrates that when Khabab went to Omar, Omar told those present to
allow him to come to the front and said, “Besides Amar, son of Yasir, there is none on
the surface of this earth who deserves to occupy this place more than you.” It was on
that occasion that Khabab showed Omar the scars on his back that were made through
the repeated suffering he received from the unbelievers.
