Medina. In her vision she saw the moon drift towards Khaybar and when it reached the
city it had come to rest in her lap. Innocently, Safiya told her husband Kinanah, the son
of Abi Al-Huqaiq of her vision whereupon, in an uncontrollable burst of anger, he struck
her violently upon her face saying, "This can mean but one thing, you desire Muhammad
the King of Hijaz!" When Lady Safiya was brought before the Prophet (salla Allahu alihi
wa sallam) he noticed her badly bruised eye and asked her about it whereupon she told
him of her vision and how after she had related it to her husband he had struck her.

As part of the terms of surrender it was agreed that the Jews would hand over all their
wealth to the Muslims in exchange for their life. However, Kinanah and some other Jews
thought they had the upper hand and concealed not only their wealth but also known
treasures. They were so sure of themselves that they said if any were found they would
forfeit their lives and their womenfolk were to be taken as captives. The wealth was
discovered and Kinanah and those like him were put to death and the wealth confiscated
and Safiya was taken captive. The Prophet (salla Allahu alihi wa sallam) did not put
them to death himself, rather they were handed over to relatives of slain family members
who put them to death. The Prophet (salla Allahu alihi wa sallam) released Lady Safiya
and her dowry was the payment of her release.
