“I (Zaid, the son of Arqam) said, ‘We went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, which was hard on the people. During it Abdullah, the son of Ubayy said, ‘Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, in case they disperse.’ He also said, ‘If we return to Medina, the most honorable one will drive out the one who is the most mean.’ I went to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, and informed him of this and he sent for Abdullah son of Ubayy, who denied on oath having said it. The people began to say, ‘Zaid has lied to the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him.’ I was very upset by this until sura Al-Munafiqun (Chapter 63, The Hypocrites) was sent down. Then the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, sent for the hypocrites so that he might ask forgiveness for them but they turned their heads away out of arrogance.’"
