The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, had sent cavalry ahead of the
army to capture spies. Along the route from Medina to Mecca lived the tribe of the Banu
Khuza‟ah (the tribe who were attacked by the Banu Bakr) who were now preventing
anyone to pass through their area. When Abu Sufyan and his companions reached their
area the cavalry seized them and took them to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace
be upon him and Abu Sufyan and his companions feared they were about to lose their
lives.

Upon seeing Abu Sufyan, Omar confronted him and beat him on his neck, and the
people surrounded Abu Sufyan. He was taken to the Messenger of Allah, praise and
peace be upon him, and Abu Sufyan fears that he was about to be put to death
increased.

During the Time of Ignorance, Abbas had been a close friend of Abu Sufyan so Abu
Sufyan cried out at the top of his voice, “Will you not hand me over to Abbas?” Abbas
arrived and everyone dispersed. Abbas set off to take him to the Messenger of Allah,
praise and peace be upon him, and ask if he may be granted Abu Sufyan his security.
