THE CONVERSION OF SAFWAN, SON OF UMAYAH

Abdullah, son of Zubair narrates that when Mecca was opened, Baghom, daughter of
Mu‟adda from the tribe of Kinanah, wife of Safwan, son of Umayah embraced Islam
whereas Safwan absconded from Mecca with his slave Yasar. When they reached a

valley, he said to Yasar, “Do you see who I see?” Yasar replied, “It is Umayr, son of
Wahab.” Safwan said, “What have I got to do with Umayr, by Allah, he has come to kill
me and has assisted the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, against
me. “

Umayr approached and Safwan said, “Aren‟t you satisfied with what you have already
done to me? You placed the burden of settling your debts and caring for your family on
me and now you have come to kill me.” Umayr replied, “O Abu Wahab, may my life be
sacrified for you. I have come to you from the best of people and the one who best
