SUHYAL, SON OF AMR AT THE BATTLE OF HUNAIN

Waqidi narrated that during the Battle of Hunain, Suhayl, son of Amr said referring to the
tribes of Thakif and Hawazin, ”The Muslims have never before experienced the like of
these two tribes.” Ikrima replied saying, “One should not speak like this, everything lies
in the control of Allah, and Muhammad has no control over affairs. If he is defeated
today, tomorrow will bring promising results.” Suhayl (who had not as yet converted)
mocked him saying, “By Allah, it was not long ago that you opposed the Messenger of
Allah, praise and peace be upon him, “ Ikrima responded, “By Allah, all our previous
efforts have been futile. We considered ourselves to be intelligent people, yet we
worshiped stones that could neither harm nor give any benefit!”
