people from the Religion.” Ikrima then asked the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace
be upon him, to teach him the best thing he knew so that he too might learn. The
Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, advised him that together with
striving in the path of Allah, he should recite: „I bear witness that there is no god except
Allah and that Muhammad is the worshiper and Messenger of Allah.‟ Ikrima continued
and said, “O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, I swear by Allah that
for every expense I bore to oppose the Religion of Allah, I shall spend double that
amount, and I swear that for every battle I fought opposing the Religion of Allah I shall
fight double their number in the path of Allah.”

Notes:

In the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be
upon him, appointed Ikrima to collect the obligatory charity from the tribe of Hawazin.

Ikrima fought in the way of Allah and became a martyr at the Battle of Ainadeen during
the Caliphate of Abu Bakr.
