Zachariah, who was a Prophet and one of the High Priests of the Temple, told
the other priests that he had more right to be Mary's guardian because his wife
was Mary's aunt therefore he was related to her. The other High Priests
protested, so it was agreed that they would go down to the river Jordan and cast
straws into it, and whosoever’s straw floated upright would be Mary's guardian.
Upon reaching the river Jordan each cast their straw into the water and much to
Prophet Zachariah's great happiness his was the only one to float upright.
The matter was decided, Mary's new guardian was her uncle, Prophet Zachariah
who hastily built a special room upstairs in the Temple for her. No one was
permitted to enter the room except Zachariah.
Mary was very happy there and spent her time worshiping and thanking Allah. At
meal times Zachariah would take food to her, but on many occasions, much to
his surprise, he would find that she had already been given fruit -- not just
seasonal fruit, but fruit which grew out of season. When he asked her where it
