weak hadiths.
We understand from Imam Ahmad that there are three types of references to be
avoided:
(1) the explanation of the Koran expounded by lesser scholars that contain a mixture of
both authentic and false hadith for which there is no chain of transmitters.
(2) the books recording stories of bravery that do not have authentic chains of
transmitters.
(3) the history books of warfare that do not have authentic chains of transmitters.
It was this statement by Imam Ahmad that prompted At-Tabari to compile an outstanding
explanation of the Koran which, remains to this day, the leading reference.
