son, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, praise and peace be upon
him, said, "The 'anger' refers to the Jews. Whereas the people who have gone astray
are the Christians". This is an authentic hadith, reported by Ahmad, Tirmizi and many
others.
The Jews referred to in the preceding hadith are not those who followed Prophet Moses.
They are the Jews who belied Prophets Moses, then Jesus, and thereafter the Jews who
were contemporaries of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon all the prophets, and the
latter generations of Jews who rejected him although they knew the truth but concealed
it. It is because of this, they are those who incur the anger of Allah. Mention of them is
found in the chapter "The Table" in which Allah refers to them as those whom He has
cursed and with whom He is angry. Allah says:
“Say, 'Shall I tell you who will receive a worse recompense from Allah than that? Those
whom Allah has cursed and with whom He is angry, and made some of them apes and
swine, and those who worship the devil. The place of these is worse, and they have
strayed further from the Right Path.'” 5:60
As for “those who are astray”, this does not include the good Christians who followed
