“They want to give it to you because you have been to Muhammad to get something
from him.” Waleed responded, “But the Koraysh know very well that I am among the
wealthiest of people!” “Then,” said Abu Jahl, “you will have to tell them something to let
them know that you have nothing to do with Muhammad.” Waleed asked, “What should I
tell them?” By Allah, none of you know as much about the poetry of the jinn than I. By
Allah, what he said was exceedingly sweet, beautiful and attractive. What he said was
like a flourishing tree, the top of which bears abundant fruit and the bottom of which is
luxuriantly green. His words will always tower without being suppressed. His speech
crushes all other speech.” Abu Jahl then said to Waleed, “Your people will never be
pleased with you until you say something against him.” To this, Waleed replied, “Give
me time to think about it.” After he had thought for a while, Waleed said, “This is nothing
but magic revived from the past.” It was in reference to Waleed‟s statement that Allah
sent down the verses:

„Leave Me alone with he whom I created
and designated for him ample wealth,
and sons that stand in witness.

I made things smooth and easy for him,
