Mecca. When he reached a place called Arak, he thought there was a possibility that he
would meet a woodcutter, or someone milking their animal, or perhaps another who had
come out for some need. In an effort to bring about an amnesty, Abbas intended to
inform any one he met of the place where the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be
upon him, was camped, before he had a chance to enter Mecca.
Abbas said he continued to look for someone when he heard the voices of Abu Sufyhan
and Budayl, son of Waraqa talking to each other. Abu Sufyan was saying to Budayl, “By
Allah, to this day I have never seen such a large concentration of campfires, nor yet an
army so large. Budayl said, „By Allah, these are the campfires of the tribe of Khuzah it
appears as if there will be a war.” Abu Sufyan said, “By Allah, the tribe of Khuzah is
smaller than that. This cannot be just their fires and army.‟ Having recognized Abu
Sufyan‟s voice, Abbas called out, ‘O Abu Handhala!‟ whereupon Abu Sufyan inquired,
„Abu; Fadhl?‟ Abbas confirmed that it was he, and Abu Sufyan replied, “May my parents
be sacrificed for you, what are you doing here?” Abbas replied, „Shame on you, Abu
Sufyan, the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, is here with his people.
By Allah, the Koraysh will surely be destroyed.‟ Abu Sufyan asked, „May my parents be
