THE PLEDGE OF AWF, SON OF MALIK AND HIS
COMPANIONS

Awf, son of Malik Ash‟ja‟e narrates that he was with either seven, eight or nine people in
the company of the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, when the
Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, “Won‟t you pledge allegiance
to the Messenger of Allah?” After the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon
him, had repeated his statement three times, they stretched out their hands and pledged
their allegiance at the hand of the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him,
and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, inform us what the
conditions of our pledge are.” He replied, “You have pledged that you will worship Allah
without ascribing any partners to Him, that you offer the five daily prayers ….” Then the
Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, whispered another condition saying,
“that you will not ask people for anything.”
