THE PLEDGE OF THOWBAN

Abu Umamah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him,
asked, “Who would like to pledge their allegiance?” Thowban who was the slave of the
Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, “(please) accept our pledge of
allegiance, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon
him, said, “Pledge that you will not ask anyone for anything.” Thowban asked, “What will
one receive for making this pledge?” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon
him, replied, “Paradise”. Thowban then gave his pledge to the Messenger of Allah,
praise and peace be upon him.
