praise and peace be upon him, allow me to pledge on behalf of my father that he will
migrate.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, replied, “I will allow
him to pledge his allegiance to Jihad because (the obligatory) migration (to Medina)
ceased on the day Mecca was opened.”
THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE BY THE COMPANIONS TO
MIGRATE AFTER THE BATTLE OF THE TRENCH
Ziyad, son of Sa‟idi narrates that during the Battle of the Trench (Khadaq) he went to the
Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, when the Companions were
engaged in pledging their allegiance at his hands to migrate. Being under the impression
that everyone (residents and non-residents of Medina) were being called to take this
pledge, Harith asked, “Will you accept this man‟s pledge to undertake the migration?”
The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, asked Harith who the person
ways and Harith replied, “He is my cousin, Howt, son of Yazid (in another narration
Yazid, son of Howt.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, informed
him, that the pledge to undertake the migration could not be taken from him (as he was
already an Ansar from Medina) and it was therefore unnecessary. Then the Messenger
of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said, “I swear by the One who controls my life
migrate.” The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, replied, “I will allow
him to pledge his allegiance to Jihad because (the obligatory) migration (to Medina)
ceased on the day Mecca was opened.”
