AT FIRST PLEDGING AT AQABA
Ubadah, son of Samit narrates that there were eleven of us when the pledge of
allegiance was taken for the first time at Aqaba. He said that because fighting in the Way
of Allah (Jihad) was not compulsory at that time their pledge was the same as that of the
women. They pledged that they would not ascribe a partner to Allah, that they would not
steal, that they would not fornicate, that they would not slander which they fabricate by
their hands and legs, that they would not kill their children, and that they will not disobey
the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, in any good (deed he
commands them to do). They were assured that whosoever fulfills this pledge will have
a guaranteed reward with Allah, whereas whosoever commits any of these sins, his
matter rests with Allah who may either punish or forgive them. The following year, the
same people return (to Mecca) and pledge their allegiance again.
THE PROXY PLEDGE OF YALA, SON OF MUNYAH ON
BEHALF OF HIS FATHER
Ya‟la, son of Munyah narrates that the day after Mecca was opened he went to the
Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, and said, “O Messenger of Allah,
