adds that they pledged they would not ascribe partners to Allah, that they would not
steal, that they would not fornicate, that they would not kill a soul whose killing Allah had
prohibited unless it was Islamically binding, that they would not plunder, or be
disobedient. They were told that if they abided by their pledge they were promised
Paradise, but if they committed any of these sins, the decision would rest with Allah.
Ubadah, son of Samit narrates that they were with the Messenger of Allah, praise and
peace be upon him, when he said, “Pledge allegiance at my hand that you will not
ascribe any partner to Allah, that you will neither steal nor fornicate. Whosoever fulfills
this pledge the reward of Paradise is guaranteed by Allah, and whosoever commits any
of these sins (without subjecting himself to the Islamic penal law in which case he is

forgiven) and Allah conceals them, then the matter rests with Allah, who may either
punish or forgive him.”
