consequences if we become involved in another battle it might go against us.” Although
Safwan had presented a solid case not to venture further with their aim the unbelievers

During this time Ma’bab arrived and did his best to persuade the unbelievers not to
engage the Muslims again saying, “Muhammad has marched out to meet you with a
great number of warriors. I have never seen so many before. He succeeded to muster all
those who did not take part in Uhud and they have expressed regret at not having taken
part and are anxious to compensate for it now.” Abu Sufyan exclaimed, “Woe to you! By
Allah, you will not leave until he comes and you see the necks of their horses. By Allah,
we have reached our decision!” Ma’bab did not let up and advised Abu Sufyan again not
to proceed. However, the unbelievers heeded Ma’bab and his words stirred panic and
fear among them so it was decided to proceed to Mecca straight away.
Before the departure of the Koraysh, the caravan of Abd Qays arrived en-route for
Medina and stopped. Abu Sufyan approached them and enticed them with camel loads
of raisons if they would go to the Prophet (salla Allahu alihi wa sallam) and deliver a
