(Aisha) she said: In the past, the day of Ashura (Muharram) was the day when the Quraysh fasted on him during the time of ignorance. In the past, the Messenger of Allah - Peace and blessing be upon him - fasted on him during the time of ignorance. When the Messenger of Allah - Peace and blessing be upon him - arrived in Medina he fasted on him and ordered people to fast on him. Then when Ramadan is obligatory then it becomes obligatory while Ashura is left out. So that whoever wants, then he can fast on it, and whoever wants, then he can leave it.
