discovered his son had embraced Islam he sent someone to search for him. Khalid
returned home with the man whereupon his father rebuked Khalid harshly then started
beating him with his whip. Khalid‟s father lashed his whip on Khalid‟s head with such
force that the whip broke as he shouted in anger, “I will not give you anything to eat!”
Khalid replied, “If you do not give me anything to eat, Allah will undoubtly provide for
me.” Khalid left his father and returned to the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be
upon him, and remained in his company.
In another narration, we learn that Khalid‟s father sent his brothers - who had as yet to
embrace Islam - and his slave Raafi in search of Khalid. When they found him, they
seized him and returned him to his father. His father rebuked and beat him so severely
with his whip that broke as he whipped Khalid on his head. Then his father said, “Do you
follow Muhammad when he opposes his people and finds fault with our gods and the
gods of our ancient forefathers?” Khalid responded, “By Allah, he (Prophet Muhammad,
praise and peace be upon him) is speaking the truth and I follow him.” Upon hearing this
his father became even more enraged and started swearing saying, “You despicable
person, go wherever you please, I swear by Allah that I shall never feed you again.”
Khalid replied, “If you stop feeding me, then Allah will provide me with my sustenance.”
Upon hearing this, Khalid‟s father threw him out of the house telling his brothers that if
