Abdullah, the son of Abbas tells us that Dimad was from the tribe of Azdishanu‟ah, and
like other members of his tribe used certain supplications to cure the insane and people
affected by evil spirits.
Dimad had heard the unbelievers of Mecca say that Muhammad was insane, so he went
to them and asked “Where is this man? Perhaps Allah will cure him at my hand.” When
he met the Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, he told him, “I recite
certain suplications by which I cure people. Indeed, Allah has cured at my hand those
people whom He wished to cure. Come let me cure you as well.” The Messenger of
Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said thrice, “Indeed, all praise is for Allah. We
praise Him and seek help from Him. None can misguide a person whom Allah has
guided, and no one can guide a person whom Allah has caused to go astray. I bear
witness that there is no god except Allah, the One who has no partner.”
Dimad exclaimed, “By Allah, I have heard the words of soothsayers, the words of
magicians and the words of poets. However, I have never heard such (elegant phrasing
of) words before. Give me your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you in Islam.”
The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, extended his hand and asked,
“Is this pledge on behalf of your people as well?” Dimad replied, “It is for my people as
