Salman’s Journey to Al Sham
Salman felt a strong need to go to the Christians and learn more about their religion but
it was impossible so he asked a trusted servant to go them and tell them of his
circumstances and ask one of their followers to discreetly visit him. The Christian arrived

and during the course of their conversation Salman asked where he might go to study
their religion. The Christian replied, “Al Sham” (today Al Sham is a conglomerate of
several countries amongst which are Syria, Jordan and Palestine), so Salman asked the
Christian to let him know when traders destined for Al Sham were in the vicinity so that
he might travel with them. Sometime thereafter traders arrived and Salman, who was
strong, managed to break free from his shackles and contacted them with the request to
allow him to travel with them. The traders agreed and so they set off to Al Sham.
