The Corrupt Bishop
When the traders reached Al Sham, Salman asked where he might find the most
revered person to teach him. The traders spoke of a certain bishop and Salman made
his way to his home and upon meeting the bishop told him his story. The bishop
welcomed him and invited him to stay with him, and so it was that Salman stayed in his
household and served him, however the bishop was corrupt. He ordered his innocent
followers to give generously in charity and collect charity from others, but instead of
distributing it among the poor, the corrupt bishop hoarded it.
When the bishop passed away the clergy assembled to bury and pray for him. Salman
startled the clergy when he said, “The bishop was a corrupt man.” They were astounded
by Salman‟s accusation and asked him to explain himself. Salman told the clergy about
the bishop‟s hoarding of the charity they had collected, and naturally, the clergy asked
Salman to produce his evidence.
Salman left and returned with seven barrels of treasures and placed them before the
clergy. The clergy were outraged, it had never entered their minds that the bishop would
